Motorhead, “Ace of Spades.”
From the album Ace of Spades (1980). How easy does it get? I really don’t think
I need to say anything about this tune. Just push play and let Lemmy and Co. rip your face off.
Nirvana, “Plateau.” From the album MTV Unplugged in New York (1994). If you’ve read my stuff for long, you probably know that I think Nirvana was the most overrated band ever to play music. That said, I’ve always thought this unplugged album was quite good. This is the first of a trio of Meat Puppets covers on the album that are some of its best moments.
Blind Guardian, “Into the
Storm (Live).” From the album Live (2003). A live version of the opening track
from Blind Guardian’s master work, Nightfall in Middle Earth, a concept album
based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion.” Of course, I love it.
Primus, “Pork Chop’s Little
Ditty.” From the album Pork Soda (1993). Not much to say about this. About 40
seconds of fading, foot-stomping banjo and then 20 seconds or so of silence.
George Thorogood and the Destroyers, “If You Don’t Start Drinkin’ (I’m Gonna Leave).” From the album Boogie People (1991). George Thorogood banging away at his three chords the way only George Thorogood can. Lots of rocking and silly humor, the trademarks of his best work.
